Call for Papers
======
Visualisierung hat als Mittel zur Veranschaulichung in der Linguistik eine lange Tradition. Man denke z. B. an Baumgraphen zur Darstellung syntaktischer Interpretationen, Karten zur Darstellung von Isoglossen und Keyword-in-Context-Darstellungen von Korpusrechercheergebnissen. Mit dem Aufkommen von Korpora mit mehreren Milliarden Wörtern sowie der damit einhergehenden Etablierung statistischer, korpuslinguistischer Methoden und der Möglichkeit, entsprechend quantitative Analysen mit qualitativ interpretierenden Analysen zu einem idealerweise iterativen empirisch-hermeneutischen Prozess zu verzahnen, hat das Thema in den letzten Jahren eine neue Relevanz bekommen und stellt heute für die Linguistik sowohl eine große Entwicklungschance als auch eine große Herausforderung dar.

Die Tagung Visuelle Linguistik will sich dieser Herausforderung stellen. Ziel ist es, ein breites Spektrum von Visualisierungsansätzen in der Linguistik und den angrenzenden Disziplinen in den Digital Humanities vorzustellen und diese insbesondere im Hinblick auf ihre Integration in Arbeitsprozesse und Methodologien und ihre Rolle im Prozess des
Erkenntnisgewinns zu diskutieren. Das Spektrum der eingeladenen Beiträge umfasst dabei wissenschaftshistorische und meta-theoretische Überlegungen bis hin zu konkreten Anwendungen, Implementationen und Techniken.

Die als dreitägige Veranstaltung mit maximal 25 Teilnehmenden geplante Tagung richtet sich an ein Publikum aus den Disziplinen Sprachwissenschaft, Korpuslinguistik, Digital Humanities und Computerlinguistik sowie verwandte Fächer. Beiträge sind in Form von Vorträgen und Poster-/Live-Computerpräsentationen möglich. Die eingereichten Beiträge werden über ein Peer-Review-Verfahren vom Programmkomitee ausgewählt. Die Reise-, Übernachtungs- und Verpflegungskosten werden für alle eingeladenen Teilnehmer/innen übernommen.

Beiträge sind zu folgenden Themen, jedoch auch darüber hinaus, möglich:
- Theorie der wissenschaftlichen Visualisierung und der Diagrammatik
- Neue Herausforderungen an die Visualisierung in den Digital Humanities und der Sprachwissenschaft
- Methoden der Visualisierung in der Sprachwissenschaft und der Digital Humanities
- Traditionelle Formen der Visualisierung in der Sprachwissenschaft

Zur Bewerbung für die Teilnahme wird ein Abstract im Rahmen von 400 bis 500 Wörtern in Deutsch oder Englisch erwartet. Das Abstract muss im PDF-Format ohne Autorennamen abgespeichert werden. Das Abstract schicken Sie bis zum 30. Juni 2014 an die Adressesymposium@visual-linguistics.net mit den folgenden Angaben in der E-Mail:

Herrenhäuser Symposium: Visual Linguistics. Theory and Application of Visualization in Linguistics

Call for papers
======
Visualization as a means of illustration has a long tradition in linguistics. Consider, for example, tree graphs for the representation of syntactic interpretations, maps to display isoglosses and keyword-in-context representations of corpus query results. With the advent of corpora with billions of words and the establishment of statistical, corpus linguistic methods and the possibility to dovetail quantitative analysis with qualitative interpretive analysis to an ideally iterative empirical-hermeneutic process, the subject has recently received a new relevance and today provides for linguistics both a great development opportunity and a great challenge.

The conference Visual Linguistics wants to face this challenge. Its aim is to present a wide range of visualization approaches in linguistics and related disciplines in the digital humanities and to discuss them in particular with regard to their integration into methodologies and their role in the process of gaining new scientific insights. The spectrum of the invited contributions encompasses the whole range from history of science and meta-theoretical considerations up to concrete applications, implementations and techniques.

The three-day event is aimed at an audience from the disciplines of linguistics, corpus linguistics, digital humanities, computational linguistics, and related subjects. Possible contributions are talks, posters and live demos. The contributions will be peer reviewed by the program committee. Travel grants covering travel and accomodation will be offered to all accepted
presenters.

The conference key topics include (but are not limited to) the
following:
- Theory of scientific visualization and diagrammatics
- New challenges of visualizations in the domains of digital humanities and linguistics
- Methods and techniques of visualizations in linguistics and digital humanities
- Traditional forms of visualizations in linguistics

To contribute please submit an abstract of 400 to 500 words in English or German. The abstract has to be in PDF format and must not contain any author names.
