Early Victorian Thoughts on the Land of Poets and Thinkers. Notes on British-German Intellectualism at the beginning of the Long Century

This article explores the meaning of ‘intellectualism’ in the first phase of Victorianism, with particular reference to its perception of tendencies in German thought of the time. To a certain extent this phase in our common, and yet distinctly different, histories of thought stands at the beginning of the ‘modern’ formation of ‘isms’.

Magie – Macht – Manipulation. Zum ambivalenten Status magischen Handelns in mittelhochdeutscher und skandinavischer Heldendichtung

Der Beitrag untersucht die manipulative Wirkung von Zauber und Magie in narrativen und literarischen Texten der mhd. und skandinavischen Heldendichtung. Während in Nibelungenlied und Vǫlsungasaga Magie nur selten und dann oft nur über magische Objekte in Stellung gebracht wird, ist sie in der Bósa saga durchaus handlungsbestimmend und im mhd. Malagis sogar wesentliches Merkmal des Protagonisten. Stets jedoch wird magisches Handeln als Manipulation der übrigen Aktanten inszeniert, was jedoch ganz unterschiedliche Bewertungen nach sich zieht: In den Varianten des Nibelungenstoffes wird Magie nur selten und teils indirekt eingesetzt, hat dann aber stets negative Folgen. In den Texten, in denen die Anwendung von Magie ausführlich beschrieben und umstands-los eingesetzt wird, kommt magische Manipulation dagegen durchaus den Protagonisten zugute. Der Beitrag beleuchtet die spezifischen narrativen Problematisierungen insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund eines schriftliterarischen Verständnisses von Magie.

The article examines the manipulative effects of magic and spells in narrative and literary texts of Middle High German and Scandinavian heroic poetry. While in the Nibelungenlied and Vǫlsungasaga magic is only rarely used and then often only comes into play via magical objects, in the Bósa saga it is plot-determining and in the Middle High German Malagis magic plays a crucial role as essential characteristic of the protagonist. Even though the usage of magic is always presented as a way to manipulate others, this manipulation entails different evaluations: In the variants of the Nibelungen material, magic is used rarely and only sometimes indirectly, but then it always has negative consequences. In the texts in which the use of magic is described in detail and used casually, magic manipulation, on the other hand, definitely benefits the protagonists. The article illuminates the specific narrative problematizations, especially against the background of a literary understanding of magic.

Flaschengeister. Narrative (heils-)geschichtlicher Verschränkung in der Geschichte von der Messingstadt (Tausendundeine Nacht) und im Reinfrit von Braunschweig

Der Beitrag untersucht vergleichend Darstellung und Funktionalisierung des Flaschengeist-Motivs in der Magnetberg-Episode des ‚Reinfrit von Braunschweig‘ und der arabischen ‚Geschichte von der Messingstadt‘ in der Fassung von ‚Tausendundeine Nacht‘. Beide Erzähltexte nutzen die im Motiv implizierte Möglichkeit der Verschränkung verschiedener historischer Zeiten in ihren je spezifischen kulturellen Kontexten und arbeiten dabei mit einer Wissenspoetik des Wunderbaren, die hier darauf zielt, heilgeschichtliche Vergangenheiten zu vergegenwärtigen. Die Flaschengeister werden als autoreflexive Figurationen der Praxis des Erzählens gedeutet, das strukturell ebenfalls differente Zeiten (‚Erzählzeit‘ und ‚erzählte Zeit‘) miteinander verschränkt.

Using a comparative approach, the paper examines the function and representation of the ‘genie in the bottle’ motif in one episode of the High Middle German romance ‘Reinfrit von Braunschweig’ and the Arabic tale of ‘The City of Brass’ (in the version of the ‘Arabian Nights’). Each narrative, in its respective cultural context, utilizes the motif ’s potential to produce an entanglement of different historical times. By confronting the characters and audiences with events from the distant past, they elicit reactions of wonder. The figure of the genie will be interpreted as an auto-reflexive figuration of narrative practice itself, which likewise interweaves different temporalities (time of telling and time told).

Gleichgeschaltete Philologie: Anglistische Romantikforschung im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland

The impact of the National Socialists’ rise to power was felt in practically all areas of German public life, not least in the higher education sector. The university system was transformed through a series of restrictions on who could teach and what could be taught. If such regulations were mainly imposed from above, there was at the same time an individual tendency among those who remained unaffected by – or who actively benefitted from – these changes to bring their respective fields of research into line with party ideology. This article explores how such dynamics unfolded in one specific disciplinary environment, the academic study of English literature and culture. Soon after January 1933, scholars began to adopt the rhetoric of Nazism to make a case for the continuing relevance of their ‘foreign’ subject matter in the ‘new’ Germany. After the outbreak of World War II, the focus shifted to a politically charged critique of English writers and writing, with literary studies repositioned as a propaganda effort in support of the war against the Allied Powers. Revisiting the publications and career histories of selected scholars, the article demonstrates that it was the literature of British Romanticism, in particular, that served as a screen onto which such changing conceptions of Englishness were projected in German academia between 1933 and 1945.

Sprechen – Schweigen – Zeigen in der Delie von Maurice Scève

Delie. Object de plus haulte vertu von Maurice Scève ist von einer Spannung zwischen Sprechen und Schweigen durchzogen: einerseits der Drang zur Beschreibung der Auswirkungen der Liebe auf das Ich, andererseits die Konfrontation mit den Schwierigkeiten, die die Artikulation ebendieser inneren Vorgänge mit sich bringt. Die bei Scève beinahe topische Dunkelheit der Texte, beruhend v.a. auf Verfahren der Reduktion und der Kondensation, ist Symptom dieser Schwierigkeiten, zugleich jedoch gibt es eine deutliche Kommunikationsabsicht. Der Beitrag untersucht verschiedene Strategien, die Scève verwendet, um auszudrücken, was er nicht direkt formulieren will oder kann, wobei die Artikulationsschwierigkeiten jeweils mittransportiert werden.

Object de plus haulte vertu de Maurice Scève est traversée par une tension entre parole et silence: d’une part, le désir de décrire les effets de l’amour sur le moi, d’autre part, la confrontation avec les difficultés que la mise en mots de ces processus internes implique. L’obscurité presque topique des textes scéviens, fondée notamment sur des procédés de réduction et de condensation, est le symptôme de ces difficultés, mais elle est accompagnée d’une nette intention de communication. L’article examine différentes stratégies que Scève – tout en soulignant la complexité du processus d’articulation – utilise pour exprimer ce qu’il ne veut ou ne peut pas formuler directement.

Essstörung, Geschlechterkampf und triebhafte Einverleibung in Almudena Grandes’ Malena, una vida hervida (1996)

Der Beitrag setzt sich mit der bislang kaum erforschten Essstörung in der Kurzgeschichte Malena, una vida hervida aus Almudena Grandes’ (1960–1921) Modelos de mujer (1996) auseinander. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die Figuren über ihr Ess- und Sexualverhalten einen Geschlechterkampf austragen, der im Sinne von Bachtins karnevalesker Logik der Umkehrung etablierte Hierarchien unterminiert und ihnen eine transgressive Ausnahmeordnung entgegensetzt. Die Entstehung von Malenas Essstörung wird zunächst durch die Internalisierung der etablierten patriarchalen Ordnung begünstigt, welche Fleisch-verzehr als männliches Privileg mit Macht assoziiert und die Frau als vom männlichen Raubtier verfolgtes essbares Tier stigmatisiert. Eine Reihe libidinöser Kompensations-mechanismen ermöglichen Malena im Laufe der Erzählung, ihren Hunger durch progressive Verschiebung auf andere Sinne zu stillen, sich zunehmend von der sexualisierten Metapher der essbaren Frau zu emanzipieren und vom passiven Objekt des männlichen Blicks zum aktiv handelnden und machtausübenden Subjekt zu werden, wodurch sie die etablierte Ordnung zunehmend in Frage stellt. Die Bachtin’sche Komik der Umkehrung macht die Kurzgeschichte als Inszenierung einer Gegenweltlichkeit lesbar, die die Grausamkeit patriarchaler Strukturen vorführt und der Lächerlichkeit preisgibt.

El artículo aborda el trastorno alimenticio, hasta ahora poco investigado, en el relato Malena, una vida hervida de la colección Modelos de mujer (1996) de Almudena Grandes (1960–2021). El análisis demuestra que los personajes libran una batalla de sexos a través de su comportamiento alimentario y sexual, que, según la lógica carnavalesca de la inversión de Bajtín, socava las jerarquías establecidas oponiéndoles un orden transgresor. El trastorno de Malena es favorecido inicialmente por la interiorización del orden patriarcal establecido, que considera comer carne como un privilegio masculino asociado con el poder y estigmatiza a las mujeres como animales comestibles perseguidos por el ‹depredador masculino›. A lo largo de la narración, una serie de mecanismos compensatorios permiten a Malena saciar su hambre mediante el desplazamiento progresivo de su apetito a otros sentidos. De esa manera, la protagonista se emancipa progresivamente de la metáfora sexualizada de la ‹mujer comestible› y pasa de ser el objeto pasivo de la mirada masculina a convertirse en un sujeto que actúa activamente y ejerce el poder, desafiando cada vez más el orden establecido. La comicidad de la inversión hace del relato una puesta en escena de lo ‹contramundano› bajtiniano, demostrando la crueldad de las estructuras patriarcales y exponiéndolas al ridículo.

Transcultural solidarity as key to a meaningful life in Lioret’s Welcome

Although Lioret’s Welcome enjoys substantial popularity for its outline and dissemination of meaningful lives and alternative societies, there is no convincing intervention paper that combines insights from transcultural studies and media psychology to explore the transcultural society portrayed in the film. This study aims to reduce that gap in knowledge. The main research questions is: How exactly does Welcome promote trans-cultural solidarity for a more meaningful life and an alternative culture, and suggests therefore an intrinsic motivation for transcultural intervention, which film scholars have so far marginalised? The study shows that the film promotes such solidarity through the humanization of migration by individualisation and, in particular, through the growing relationship between the filmic protagonists Simon and Bilal. It demonstrates Simon’s transformation from an egocentric character to a curious, open-minded, brave and persistent protagonist, who is able to show kindness, social intelligence and social responsibility. It explains that this relationship is shaped by affects and transcultural memory constructs that culminate in transcultural solidarity.

Bien que Welcome de Lioret jouisse d’une popularité substantielle pour sa représentation de vies significatives et de sociétés alternatives, il n’y a aucun article d’intervention convaincant qui combine les perspectives des études transculturelles et de la psychologie des médias pour explorer la société transculturelle dépeinte dans le film. Cette étude vise à réduire cette lacune de connaissances. La question de recherche principale est la suivante: Comment le film Welcome promeut-il exactement la solidarité transculturelle pour une vie plus significative et une culture alternative, et suggère donc une motivation intrinsèque pour l’intervention transculturelle, motivation que les universitaires du cinéma ont jusqu’à présent marginalisée? L’étude montre que le film promeut une telle solidarité par l’humanisation de la migration par l’individualisation et, en particulier, par la relation croissante entre les protagonistes Simon et Bilal. Elle démontre la transformation de Simon, d’un personnage égocentrique en un protagoniste curieux, ouvert d’esprit, courageux et persévérant, capable de montrer de la gentillesse, de l’intelligence sociale et de la responsabilité sociale. Elle explique que cette relation est façonnée par des affects et des constructions de mémoire transculturelle qui culminent en une solidarité transculturelle.
