Vom Schweigen der Vögel in Soltâne. Naturästhetik und das Experiment eines Ecocritical Close Readings von Wolframs ‚Parzival‘ (mit einem Ausblick auf ‚Iwein‘ und ‚Tristan‘)

Abstract:
Der vorliegende Beitrag liest die Soltâne-Episode aus der Perspektive des Ecocriticism und zeigt die Dynamiken eines agenziellen Natur-Kultur-Gefüges in der Szene auf. Es wird dargelegt, wie Parzival und Herzeloyde von den Vögeln affiziert werden, wobei der Kontrast zwischen den beiden Figuren, die Gegenüberstellung ihrer unterschiedlichen Positionen innerhalb des Gefüges und ihre variierenden Zugänge zu ihrer Umwelt deutlich machen, wie sehr eine ästhetische Wahrnehmung der Natur durch kulturelles Wissen, Erfahrungen und Erwartungen geprägt ist. Dabei zeigt das Close Reading der Soltâne-Episode ebenfalls, dass die fehlende kulturelle Sozialisation Parzivals nicht nur als Defizit bewertet werden muss, sondern auch die Chance bietet, jenseits kultureller Muster einen unverstellten Zugang zur Welt zu erfahren. Wie fruchtbar die Ansätze des Ecocriticism für die Mediävistik sein können, wird schließlich mit Blick auf Tristans Kindheit sowie auf den Wilden Mann und die Brunnen-Aventiure im ‚Iwein‘ diskutiert.

This paper reads the Soltâne episode from an ecocritical perspective by identifying the dynamics of an agential nature-culture network in this scene. It shows how Parzival and Herzeloyde are affected by the birds, whereby the contrast between the two protagonists, the contrast of their different positions within the network and their varying approaches to their surroundings make clear how much aesthetic perception of nature is shaped by cultural knowledge, experience and expectations. The close reading of the Soltâne episode also shows that Parzival’s lack of cultural socialisation is not only a deficit, but also an opportunity to experience an undisguised access to the world beyond cultural patterns. Finally, how productive the approaches of ecocriticism can be for medieval studies is discussed with regard to Tristan’s childhood as well as the wild man and the fountain aventiure in ‘Iwein’.

Abstract:
This article examines the planning, curation, and development of the Representations of the Caribbean in Periodicals Digital Archive (ROCPDA). The article traces the emergence of the project, its methodologies and main aims, and explores some of the problems involved in creating archives composed of colonial records. The article argues that creating digital archives such as ROCPDA necessitates approaches to archival research, curation, and presentation that are grounded in post- and decolonial praxis, and details some of the approaches ROCPDA used in its mission to serve as a critical digital archive, rather than a passive repository of colonial records.

Anthology, Archive, Corpus: the Design and Implications of African American Poetry: a Digital Anthology

Abstract:
This essay considers how a digital collection of African American poetry from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries might transform our understanding of the shape of African American literary history. The vehicle is a digital project called African American Poetry: a Digital Anthology, which aims to serve as both a comprehensive textual corpus and a tagged and annotated collection – a project that combines elements of the anthology, the archive, and the corpus. The goal of the project as a whole is to bring together well-known and widely anthologised figures like Claude McKay, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Langston Hughes, and Countee Cullen, alongside a large body of poets whose names and writings have today fallen off the critical radar. The present essay will describe the methods and goals of the project in some detail, beginning with historically-informed definitional accounts of each of the three keywords in our title: the “Anthology,” “Archive,” and “Corpus.” Since the meaning of each term is, we find, rather fluid in the digital context, a functionalist approach is adopted. African American Poetry: a Digital Anthology, we argue, can be seen as using the affordances of the Scalar digital platform to perform all three functions.

Reading Global Anti-Fascism in 1930s British Publishing: New Writing Magazine Across Formats and Archives

Abstract:
In this essay we argue that in order to understand global modernism, we need to engage with literary modernists’ own writings on globalism. We situate modernist books and periodicals as objects enmeshed in an emerging international book market and thematically concerned with literature’s potential to make change in a hostile political world specifically in the context of world war. The anti-fascist journal New Writing, edited by John Lehmann and published by various publishers in England and distributed globally, acts as a site for debates about internationalism and globalism in the 1930s and 40s. The journal published works by literary figures such as W. H. Auden, Ahmed Ali, George Orwell, Elizbeth Bowen, and others, and its mandate was to publish new writing from around the world by writers who were specifically positioning themselves against fascism. In reading the magazine now, we assess the complexity, multi-materiality, and slipperiness of digital and physical archives as sources of literary and cultural history, focusing on New Writing’s archival presence in the Modernist Archives Publishing Project (MAPP) and drawing on sources from three of that resource’s main partner libraries (the Harry Ransom Center, the University of Reading’s Archive of British Publishing and Printing, and the E. J. Pratt Library at the University of Toronto). We argue that historical research collections as sites that are themselves products of contemporary global networks and that offer often conflicting and multi-layered definitions of internationalism that create palimpsests of global political and literary collaborations.

Curating Archive of Dreams: Reflections on the Opening Exhibition at the Archiv der Avantgarden in Dresden (May–August 2024)

Abstract:
This article profiles the Archiv der Avantgarden (ADA) as an active archive of knowledge. It was established in 2016 when Egidio Marzona donated 1.5 million objects previously housed in his private residence to the Dresden State Art Collections, which designated the Blockhaus – a baroque Guard House – to be a special place to house the new collection. The article describes the process of curating the Archive of Dreams, the first exhibition of ADA that took place in 2024. It covers the process of selecting an exhibition topic that would introduce audiences to the collection’s different avantgarde ‘isms’ and its transdisciplinary contents, incorporating everything from literary artifacts to those relating to theatre music, philosophy, and photography. The article links the idea of dreams to the utopian visions of avantgarde artists and explores questions of audience, works that function as archives in their own right, and situates Archive of Dreams as an exhibition that shows how archives mediate a complex shift from archive-as-source to archive-as-subject.

An Indian Collection in Ithaca: Anglophone Modernism and the Margins of the Bombay Poets Archive

Abstract:
The Bombay Poets Archive occupies a space that is both privileged and peripheral, near to the core of Western academic wealth and far from Indian researchers themselves. Housed at Cornell University Library, this collection brings together the personal papers of several Indian poets who wrote in English, came to prominence in the 1970s, and joined forces to found the highly influential Clearing House co-operative press. An ongoing digitisation project promises to overcome the archive’s dislocation from India, narrowing its focus to Clearing House but making visible and accessible the workings of this creative network. “An Indian Collection in Ithaca” delineates the four types of documents being digitised – letters, drafts, business records, and clippings – demonstrating how they capture the publishing histories of Arvind Krishna Mehrotra’s Nine Enclosures (1976) and Distance in Statute Miles (1982) from inspiration to reception. The interconnected papers of the Bombay Poets Archive illuminate the relationships that underpinned a long-marginalised poetic community, revealing the breadth of achievement and the depth of cultural ferment that characterise modernist English-language Indian poetry. I argue that a freely available digital archive will help to foreground these supposedly “marginal” poets within the increasingly polycentric literary landscape of the Global Anglophone.

Juan de Cabriada, la iatroquímica y la quinina

Abstract:
Juan de Cabriada es un representante de la iatroquímica, una disciplina que se extendió por toda Europa en el siglo XVII. En este artículo se aborda el campo de dicha disciplina, el lugar que ocupa en la historia de la química, y cuál es su relación con la farmacia y la medicina. También se analizan las influencias de Paracelso y de las teorías herméticas, las cuestiones de si Cabriada adopta un enfoque ecléctico o se distancia de otras escuelas médicas, y cuáles son los criterios que lo guían. Por último, se analiza la relación entre la teoría y la práctica tomando como ejemplo la quinina, remedio recomendado para uso práctico.

Juan de Cabriada is a representative of iatrochemistry, which was widespread throughout Europe in the 17th century. The scope of this discipline, its place in the history of chemistry, and its relationship to pharmacy and medicine will therefore be discussed. The influence of Paracelsus and hermetic theories will also be examined. Does Cabriada take an eclectic approach, or does he distance himself from other medical schools? What criteria guide him in this? Finally, the relationship between theory and practice will be explored using the example of quinine, a remedy recommended for practical use.

Tu conviendras avec moi, citoyen rédacteur – Funktionen von citoyen in der französischen Revolutionspresse

Abstract:
Der vorliegende Artikel beschäftigt sich mit dem semantischen und funktionalen Profil des Wortes citoyen in der französischen Revolutionspresse ab 1789. In dieser Zeit etabliert sich citoyen (ebenso wie citoyenne) in der Personenanrede und -bezeichnung als neue Funktion neben dem bereits etablierten Gebrauch in zentralen juristischen und politischen Kontexten der Aufklärung. Basierend auf dem Pressekorpus Retronews mit journalistischen Texten aus drei Jahrhunderten werden die verschiedenen grammatischen, morphologischen und stilistischen Varianten des Wortes vor dem Hintergrund der revolutionären Ereignisse analysiert (citoyens!; dame citoyenne; citoyen collègue). Parallel findet auch die in der damaligen Presse geführte Diskussion über den Gebrauch von citoyen im Verhältnis zu den alten Anredeformen (Monsieur etc.) Beachtung, die nach der Gründung der ersten Republik 1792 für einige Zeit in Verruf gerieten.

Le présent article portera sur le profil sémantique et fonctionnel du mot ‹citoyen› dans la presse révolutionnaire française à partir de 1789. C’est à cette époque-là que se manifeste la fonction appellative de ce mot déjà bien établi dans le vocabulaire juridique et politique des Lumières. Ce nouvel usage concerne, bien que dans une mesure nettement divergente, ‹citoyen› ainsi que ‹citoyenne›. Le corpus de presse Retronews, présentant une multitude de textes journalistiques de trois siècles, est la base pour l’analyse des différentes variantes grammaticales, morphologiques et stylistiques de ce mot (‹citoyens!›; ‹dame citoyenne›; ‹citoyen collègue› etc.) L’article considère en plus la discussion menée dans la presse du temps sur l’usage de ‹citoyen› par rapport aux anciens appellatifs comme ‹Monsieur›, tombés en disgrâce en 1792 avec la fondation de la Première République.

Per Primo Levi poeta: tre nuove traduzioni in tedesco

Abstract:
Das Übersetzen von und die Auseinandersetzung mit Primo Levis dichterischem Werk öffnet eine weniger häufig eingenommene, aber wesentliche Perspektive, um die Poetik des Autors in ihrer Gesamtheit zu erfassen. Nach der Erläuterung einiger Besonderheiten von Levis Gedichten sowie der Herausforderungen, vor die ihre Übertragung in eine andere Sprache stellt, präsentiert der Beitrag die erste deutsche Übersetzung von drei Gedichten aus der Mitte der 1980er-Jahre: Una valle, Il disgelo und Agli amici.

Tradurre e studiare le poesie di Primo Levi offre una prospettiva meno usuale ma fondamentale per comprendere nella sua interezza la poetica dell’autore. Dopo aver illustrato e commentato le peculiarità dei versi di Levi e le difficoltà da superare per volgerle in un’altra lingua, il contributo presenta la prima traduzione tedesca di tre poesie risalenti a metà anni Ottanta: Una valle, Il disgelo e Agli amici.

Variations interlinguistiques des proverbes créoles dans Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle de Simone Schwarz-Bart

Abstract:
Dans son roman Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle (1972) l’écrivaine guadeloupéenne Simone Schwarz-Bart réalise une ré-énonciation des proverbes créoles en les enchâssant dans le contexte du roman écrit en français. L’autrice non seulement traduit les proverbes au français, mais elle change aussi leur structure ou leur lexique. Or, le recours aux versions originales des proverbes employés met en évidence que les modifications réalisées par Schwarz-Bart portent des aspects de race et genre qui restent inaperçus aux lecteurs et lectrices exclusivement francophones. Cette contribution vise à montrer les conséquences de ces variations pour, d’un côté, la compréhension du roman et, de l’autre côté, pour la conception schwarz-bartienne de la relation entre la langue française et les langues créoles tant discutée dans les contextes postcoloniaux.

In ihrem Roman Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle (1972, dt. Télumée) schreibt die aus Guadeloupe stammende Autorin Simone Schwarz-Bart kreolische Sprichwörter um, indem sie sie in die Gattung des französischsprachigen Romans einbettet. Sie übersetzt die Sprichwörter nicht nur ins Französische, sondern verändert auch ihre Struktur und Lexik. Rekonstruiert man die originale Version der Sprichwörter, so wird deutlich, dass die von Schwarz-Bart vorgenommenen Modifikationen Aspekte von Race und Gender aufweisen, die rein französischsprachigen Leserinnen und Lesern verborgen bleiben. Dieser Beitrag möchte die Folgen solcher Variationen einerseits für das Verständnis des Romans, andererseits für Schwarz-Barts Konzeption des Verhältnisses zwischen der französischen Sprache und den kreolischen Sprachen aufzeigen, das in den postkolonialen Studien nach wie vor intensiv diskutiert wird.

Tiranía salvaje y migración en los relatos de Anabelle Aguilar Brealey

Abstract:
Trataremos en este trabajo a la escritora de relatos Anabelle Aguilar Brealey a quien el fenómeno de la migración ha llevado a crear nuevos mundos que no tienen una directa referencia geográfica con el mundo real, sino que ella crea distintas ciudades o campos silvestres en cuyas descripciones nos aproximamos a olores y colores novedosos con nombres inéditos. En estos relatos se desarrollan diversas formas de relación entre los personajes humanos y no humanos que llevan a diferentes formas de asociación entre ellos.
Los relatos hablan entre otros temas de personas hechas presas por un tirano que no tiene nombre propio, sino que se definen por característica corporales y personales. Ellos apremian a saber dónde está ese tirano, si es que queremos averiguarlo. Pero también nos comunican que el territorio al que se emigra que puede ser una ciudad inventada o un campo estéril en el cuál y por el cual se sueña, se convierte muchas veces en pesadilla porque existen mecanismos de poder que propician ese mal sueño.

Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Schriftstellerin Anabelle Aguilar Brealey, die durch das Phänomen der Migration dazu inspiriert wurde, neue Welten zu erschaffen, die keinen direkten geografischen Bezug zur realen Welt haben. Stattdessen kreiert sie verschiedene Städte oder wilde Landschaften, deren Beschreibungen uns mit neuartigen Gerüchen und Farben mit unbekannten Namen vertraut machen. Außerdem entwickelt sie in diesen Erzählungen verschiedene Formen der Beziehung zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Figuren.
Die Erzählungen handeln unter anderem von Menschen, die von einem Tyrannen gefangen genommen wurden, der keinen eigenen Namen hat, sondern durch körperliche und persönliche Merkmale definiert wird. Sie machen neugierig darauf zu erfahren, wo dieser Tyrann ist, wenn wir es denn herausfinden wollen. Aber sie vermitteln uns auch, dass das Land, in das sie auswandern, sei es eine erfundene Stadt oder eine öde Landschaft, in und wegen der sie träumen, oft zu einem Albtraum wird, der durch Machtmechanismen begünstigt wird.
