Ausschreibung: Promotionsprogramm und DAAD-Stipendium an der Graduate School Practices of Literature, WWU Münster

Der Fachbereich 09 (Philologie) der WWU Münster bietet zum 1. Oktober 2019 Plätze in dem strukturierten literaturwissenschaftlichen Promotionsprogramm der Graduate School Practices of Literature (GSPoL) an. Internationale Studierende können sich überdies um ein vierjähriges DAAD-Stipendium im Rahmen des Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP) bewerben.

Promotionsprogramme entwickeln sich in Europa zu einem zentralen Element der Qualifizierung und Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses. Qualitätsstandards hinsichtlich der Auswahl und Betreuung von Doktorand*innen sowie ein internationales Forschungsumfeld tragen zur Attraktivität dieser Programme bei und schaffen insbesondere für Bewerber*innen aus dem Ausland ideale Startvoraussetzungen. An der GSPoL haben exzellente Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen die Möglichkeit, von intensiver interdisziplinärer Betreuung zu profitieren und sich sowohl auf wissenschaftliche Karrieren als auch auf außerakademische Berufsfelder vorzubereiten.

Beteiligte Fächer: Anglistik/Amerikanistik, Arabistik/Islamwissenschaft, Baltis-tik, Buchwissenschaft, Germanistik, Komparatistik, Lateinische Philologie, Mittel- und neulateinische Philologie, Niederlandistik, Nordistik, Romanistik (Schwerpunkte: Französisch, Spanisch und Italienisch), Sinologie, Slavistik.

Die individuellen Promotionsthemen werden in einen Rahmen eingebunden, der drei Schwerpunkte umfasst:

1. Literatur, Kultur und Gesellschaft
(Gesellschaftsbezug von Literatur und Literatur-/Kulturwissenschaft; Theo-rien der Gesellschaft; Kulturtheorien; cultural turn und Literaturwissenschaft)

2. Theorie(n) der Literatur-/Kulturwissenschaft
(Wissenschaftstheorie; Geschichte, Theorie und Methoden der Literatur-/Kulturwissenschaft)

3. Literatur-/Kulturwissenschaft und Praxis
(berufspraktische Anwendungsfelder literatur-/kulturwissenschaftlichen Wissens; der literarische Markt; literatur-/kulturwissenschaftliche Schlüsselqualifikationen; Verhältnis von literatur-/kulturwissenschaftlicher Theorie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Praxis)

Curriculum: Das Curriculum umfasst Vorlesungen/Vortragsreihen und Workshops, Kolloquien, Projektgruppen sowie eine Reihe von Wahlpflichtveranstaltungen (z.B. Praktika, akademische Lehre etc.).

Betreuung: Jede*r Promovierende erhält ein individuelles, interdisziplinäres Betreuungspanel, dem jeweils drei Mitglieder angehören. Es wird eine schriftliche Betreuungsvereinbarung getroffen und ein individueller Arbeits- und Zeitplan aufgestellt.

Voraussetzungen

  • einschlägiger Magister-, Master- oder Staatsexamensabschluss (i.d.R. in der Literaturwissenschaft) mit der Mindestnote „gut“ (2,0)
  • Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse sowie ggf. weitere Fremdsprachenkenntnisse gemäß § 5 Abs. 2 der Promotionsordnung der GSPoL (ein vorbereitender Deutschkurs kann in Absprache mit dem DAAD vor Antritt des Stipendiums Teil der Förderung sein)

Zusätzliche Voraussetzungen für DAAD-Stipendien:

  • zum Zeitpunkt der Nominierung beim DAAD darf der letzte Universitätsabschluss (d.h. die letzte Prüfungsleistung) nicht länger als sechs Jahre zurückliegen
  • Bewerber*innen dürfen sich zum Zeitpunkt der Nominierung nicht länger als fünfzehn Monate in Deutschland aufgehalten haben
  • im Rahmen der Promotion geplante (Forschungs-)Aufenthalte außerhalb Deutschlands dürfen ein Jahr (= 25% der Gesamtförderdauer) nicht überschreiten und nicht zu Beginn des Stipendiums angetreten werden

Bewerbungsverfahren

Die Bewerbung für eine Aufnahme zum Wintersemester 2019/2020 ist bis zum 31. Mai 2019 möglich. Bewerbungsunterlagen können in deutscher oder englischer Sprache eingereicht werden. Die Bewerbung erfolgt in einem zwei- oder dreistufigen Verfahren:

Stufe 1: Bewerbung an der GSPoL (in elektronischer Form als ein PDF-Dokument) mit folgenden Unterlagen:

  • Motivationsschreiben/Begründung für die Bewerbung an der GSPoL
  • tabellarischer Lebenslauf (ohne Passfoto)
  • Nachweis über einen einschlägigen Hochschulabschluss (i.d.R. in der Li-teraturwissenschaft) mit der Mindestnote „gut“ (2,0) gemäß § 5 Abs. 1 der Promotionsordnung der GSPoL
  • Nachweis über Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse sowie ggf. weitere Fremdsprachenkenntnisse gemäß § 5 Abs. 2 der Promotionsordnung der GSPoL
  • ca. halbseitige Skizze (Abstract) der geplanten Dissertation
  • ca. zehnseitiges Exposé der geplanten Dissertation, in dem detailliert zu den Zielen und Inhalten, zur fachlichen Relevanz und zur Methode des Forschungsvorhabens Stellung genommen wird
  • differenzierter Arbeits- und Zeitplan
  • zwei schriftliche Gutachten von Hochschullehrer*innen (DAAD-Bewerber*innen müssen dieses Formular verwenden: https://www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.pdf oder https://www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.doc)

Stufe 2: Auswahlverfahren / Vorstellungsgespräch an der GSPoL

Call for Applications: PhD Programme and DAAD Scholarship at the Graduate School Practices of Literature, WWU Münster, Germany

The Graduate School Practices of Literature (GSPoL) at the University of Münster invites doctoral candidates in literary studies to apply for the winter term 2019/2020. In addition, international students have the opportunity to apply for a four-year DAAD scholarship funded by the Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP).

Graduate schools and structured doctoral training have been widely adopted by institutions across Europe to enhance students’ networking skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, and employability in or outside academia. High-quality standards regarding the selection and hosting of doctoral students, as well as an inter-national research environment, create an ideal setting particularly for international candidates. At GSPoL, students benefit from interdisciplinary supervision and exchange and have the opportunity to prepare for careers in academic and non-academic contexts.

Areas of study: English/American Studies, Arabic/Islamic Studies, Baltic Studies, Book Studies, German Studies, Comparative Studies, Latin Philology/Studies, (Neo )Medieval Latin Studies, Dutch Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Romance Studies (main areas: French, Spanish and Italian Literature), Sinology, and Sla-vonic Studies.

The program revolves around three main research areas:

1. Literature, Culture and Society
(relationship between literature, culture and society; social theories; cultural theories; cultural turn and/in literary studies)

2. Theories of Literature and Culture
(science studies; history, theory and methodology in literary/cultural studies)

3. Literary and Cultural Studies and the Professional World
(professional sectors that require expertise in literary/cultural studies; the literary marketplace; transferable skills)

Curriculum: lecture series and workshops, colloquia, research groups, and elec-tive options such as internships, academic teaching, etc.

Supervision: Each doctoral candidate will have an individual interdisciplinary support group consisting of three supervisors. A written mentoring agreement and an individual timeline will be established and signed by the PhD candidate and their supervisors.

Requirements

  • Master’s/Magister/Staatsexamen degree (usually in literary studies) with a minimum grade of “gut” (2.0)
  • German, English and, possibly, additional foreign language skills accord-ing to § 5 (2) of the GSPoL study regulations (if necessary, the DAAD programme may include a preparatory German language course)

Additional Requirements for DAAD Scholarships

  • applicants must have received their Master’s degree (i.e. taken their last final exam) no more than six years prior to the time when the DAAD receives the nomination letter
  • applicants should not have resided in Germany for more than fifteen months prior to the nomination to the DAAD
  • during the PhD programme, (research) stays outside Germany may not exceed one year in total (= 25% of the funding period) and may not start at the beginning of the scholarship

Application Guidelines
The application deadline for the winter term 2019/2020 is May 31, 2019. Applications may be submitted in German or English. The application follows a two- or three-step process:

Step 1: Application to the GSPoL (via email as a single PDF file) consisting of:

  • letter of motivation stating the reasons for the application to the GSPoL
  • curriculum vitae (without photograph)
  • proof that the applicant has completed a master’s degree (usually in literary studies) with a minimum grade of “gut” (2.0) (according to § 5 (1) of the GSPoL study regulations)
  • proof of German, English and, possibly, additional foreign language skills according to § 5 (2) of the GSPoL study regulations
  • brief (approx. half-page) abstract of the PhD project
  • project proposal of about 10 pages in length, including a title, table of contents, detailed outline (of the topic; its originality and significance; aims and methodology), as well as a bibliography
  • detailed timeline
  • two letters of reference (DAAD applicants are required to use the official DAAD form: https://www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.pdf or https://www.daad.de/medien/deutschland/stipendien/formulare/recommendation.doc)

Step 2: personal interview at the GSPoL

Step 3 (only DAAD applicants): nomination to the DAAD and standard application procedure at and final decision by the DAAD (online application with supporting documentation via the DAAD portal)
