In order to promote dialogue and exchange between young researchers from Germany and Latin America, the Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS) announces four dual research scholarships of up to 6 months of maximum duration within its “Transatlantic Tandem” program, establishing one in each of its Latin American locations:

  • Guadalajara/México
  • San José/Costa Rica
  • Quito/Ecuador
  • Buenos Aires/Argentina
Two researchers, one from Latin America and one from Germany, will work in collaboration on a common research topic related to the CALAS research program for the study of crisis phenomena from Latin America. Your joint application should highlight the additional academic value of your cooperation. The application must also define the concrete results and aims of your collaboration.

Thematic focus
Latin America counts on significant experiences in the processing of multiple crises. In facing these challenges, theoretical and empirical approaches are generated which are important not only for the region, but also for the understanding and general solutions to humanity’s current problems. CALAS’ trans-disciplinary research on “Coping with Crises from Latin American Perspectives” focuses on critical questions about how these crises and processes of change are provoked, accelerated, decelerated, perceived and reflected by different social actors. What strategies for coping with crises at multiple levels emerge in the process? How can new problem-solving approaches, including those of a transregional nature, be effective or institutionalized?
Proposals that are submitted should address in one way or another these general approaches of CALAS. We particularly welcome projects that show interest in more than one of the research areas covered by CALAS, and whose academic profile guarantees the interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological focuses which are required for research at CALAS. In this sense, it is expected that the proposed research projects contribute to reflecting, deconstructing and decentralizing the state of knowledge centered in the West on concepts, dynamics and solutions, and thus adapt them to the context of the region.

Conditions
The call is open to (post)doctoral applicants with a university education in the humanities or social sciences. The applications are also accepted in which one of the two persons does not hold a doctorate degree but has additional qualifications and research experience that is proven by having published at least two international academic papers of high scientific quality relevant to the research topic.
An effective operational level of Spanish is required.
CALAS is committed to inclusion and the goal of gender equality. It explicitly welcomes applications from qualified persons with severe disabilities and handicaps. The CALAS scholarship program aims at gender parity and promotes affirmative action policies.
The scholarship recipient is expected to reside for the duration of the scholarship in the different cities where CALAS is located, and to participate in the activities and events of the CALAS. She/he will have the opportunity to make use of the resources of CALAS and the host institution, which cooperate with CALAS, including office space, access to libraries and research facilities.
The scholarship is endowed with a competitive remuneration. The scholarship recipients will also receive a refund for their round-trip airfare to the CALAS headquarters and family support in case of traveling accompanied. To promote joint research, they can apply for additional funds that facilitate field research, organize a small academic event (e.g. workshop) and/or visit one of the other CALAS affiliated centers in Latin America or Germany, where they are expected to present their research at a public conference. CALAS does not have a residence to house its visiting researchers. However, their administrative staff will help you find suitable lodging to rent.
At the end of the research stay, CALAS expects the fellows to publish the results of their collaboration in at least two academic articles. The search for a suitable publication mean is up to the authors. In addition, scholarship holders must account for their activities in a 5-page report.
